Why I Started Painting the Moon

For those of you who don’t know, I studied fine art in Port Elizabeth and graduated with a B-Tech after four years. After studying art, I went through a really intense breakup, started a new job in media, and navigated life as a fresh graduate. Then, after two years of working and learning, I moved to Cape Town at 25.

At that time, I was working at Dear Rae, a wonderfully creative space for play and collaboration. But, surprisingly, I didn’t pick up a paintbrush or pencil—or make any art at all—for the next six years. Those of you who’ve studied art may understand this feeling. I had such creative fatigue. I was tired of wearing my heart on my sleeve for everyone to see, and honestly, I didn’t even know what I wanted to say anymore.

Fast forward to 2016. I was loving life in Cape Town, having experiences that made me dig deeper into my identity and my sexuality. I felt inspired. I felt alive. And finally, I picked up a paintbrush again.

I truly believe that our capacity for pleasure and making space for our bodies can inspire creativity in our daily lives. For the first time, I felt the longing to create for myself, not for others. I’ve always loved the moon and the night sky—the possibilities they bring with their expansiveness and the connection we, especially women, have to the moon. It felt like she was my mother, watching over me in this beautiful new city I was brave enough to move to.

When making art, I like to incorporate an element that I can’t control. I had only painted during my first two years at university, so I decided that watercolors would be a good place to start again. The moon, with all its wonderful roundness, became an abstract shape that held so much meaning for me. And so, my love affair with painting moons began!

Since then, I’ve painted many, many moons. Although they’re not part of my daily practice anymore, I still love creating them, especially for commissions. I’m most excited when someone requests a “Memory Moon”—a painting that captures a moment in time, like a child’s birthday or a wedding anniversary. I love the idea of children growing up with their own piece of art, learning to value creativity and nature as they grow up with their moon on the wall.

The moons I’m saying goodbye to in my Celestial Spring Clean were created during this transformative time when I was reconnecting with art. They hold a special place in my heart. But I know that to welcome new things, we must let go of the old and make space.

If you’ve had your heart set on owning one of these moons, click here to take advantage of this last offer. They’ll be 15% off until the end of the day, and then they’ll be gone for good.

I’m so grateful for each and every one of you .

All my love,

Amy
